     The Road Test

On the Day of Your Road Test:

If conditions and time allow, the DMV will post on its web site information about road test cancellations that occur due to weather or other conditions.  If there is nothing posted, call the county office

Be on time.
Plan to be at the road test post 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time. If you are late or you fail to appear for your test, your test can be canceled. You must schedule another appointment, and you receive no preference for an earlier appointment than other applicants.

Bring your photo learner permit.
If you have an interim or temporary learner permit without a photo, you must also show a NYS photo driver license or a NYS non-driver photo ID card. Photo documents from other states are not acceptable.

Bring your MV-278 pre-licensing course certificate or MV-285 driver education certificate.

You must bring form MV-262 (Certification of Supervised Driving) if you under age 18 and have a class DJ or MJ learner permit. The form is completed by your parent, guardian, driver education teacher or driving school instructor and certifies you have had the required hours of supervised practice driving. Form MV-262 is not required if you are 17 years of age and have a form MV-285 driver education certificate.

  • Remember that if you drive to the road test site, the driver who supervises you must be age 21 or older and license to drive the vehicle that you operate.
  • You cannot drive in a road test area except during the road test.
  • Confirm that the vehicle you bring for the test has a current registration, a valid inspection, and operates properly. Check the seat belts, headlights, doors and other equipment to confirm that they operate properly.

When you arrive at the road test site, park behind the last vehicle in line. Leave enough room to pull out and around in case you are tested before the driver ahead of you.

Move to the driver's seat when the license examiner indicates to do so. Make sure your driver's seat and mirrors are adjusted properly, and don't forget to buckle your seat belt. The examiner will take time to explain how the test will take place.  This is your opportunity to ask questions.

The passenger car road test usually takes about 15 minutes. It will test your ability to make basic maneuvers needed in everyday driving. You will have to make left and right turns, stop at intersections controlled by stop signs and traffic lights, and to parallel park. You also will be asked to turn your vehicle around in a narrow street (three-point turn) and to drive in fairly heavy traffic.

Follow the examiner's instructions. The license examiner will be looking for you to demonstrate basic driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws.  During your test, the examiner will point out mistakes you make and will give you information that will help you correct them. Relax, and listen to what the examiner tells you. He or she may have you repeat a maneuver to see if you can correct a mistake you made earlier.
